DeLoach

Estate

On an idyllic 20-acre farm on the Olivet Bench in the Russian River Valley, DeLoach’s organic and Demeter Certified Biodynamic® estate produces world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The 17-acre estate vineyard is planted on Huichica clay loam soil, a “river and terrace” soil type that is known for its ability to produce high-quality grapes. Cooling fog regularly ebbs and flows through the channels cut by waterways, usually arriving in the evening and retreating in the morning.

The Russian River Original

DeLoach is celebrated as the Russian River Original, having pioneered the planting of Pinot Noir on the Olivet Bench in 1973. It was also the first winery to feature “Russian River Valley” as an appellation designation on its labels before the region received official AVA status. That designation was granted in 1983, thanks in large part to Christine DeLoach and fellow members of the Sonoma County Vintners, who petitioned the TTB to formally recognize the unique character of the region.

A Great Site is Reborn

In July 2008 DeLoach was certified organic by the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) and in December 2009, Demeter awarded Biodynamic® certification for both our estate vineyards and one-acre garden. In the cellar, traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques are used — open-top wood fermenters, native yeast fermentations and hand punch-downs — to produce terroir-driven wines of distinction. The Boisset family’s vision has been rewarded through various accolades, including being named a Top 100 Winery by Wine & Spirits Magazine twelve times.

The Soil

The DeLoach estate is planted on Huichica Loam, a well-draining, moderately fertile soil composed of clay loam and volcanic ash. Formed from ancient volcanic activity, particularly from Mount St. Helena, this unique soil developed as volcanic ash mixed with alluvial deposits near riverbanks. Its structure allows for deep root penetration, efficient moisture retention, and natural aeration, promoting steady vine growth without excessive vigor. The volcanic ash contributes minerality, adding complexity and depth to the wines. These qualities make Huichica Loam particularly well-suited to premium varietals like Pinot Noir, which benefit from balanced water retention, deep rooting, and controlled vigor.

The Blocks

The estate vineyard is composed of seven blocks of Pinot Noir and four blocks of Chardonnay, each planted with unique combinations of clones and rootstocks, either 420A or 101-14, to bring out the best expression from every part of the property. This patchwork of clones ripens at different times, often weeks apart, with each contributing distinct characteristics to the final Estate blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, resulting in a wine that reflects the nuances of each vintage.

Les Parecelles Cachées

Located on the western edge of the DeLoach estate, Les Parcelles Cachées—the hidden blocks—feature select plantings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The shallow, well-drained soils promote early ripening in Pinot Noir, contributing vibrant red fruit, subtle spice, and mineral-driven structure. Tucked in the far west corner of the estate is Block 10. Inspired by Burgundy’s Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot Monopole, a historic white wine vineyard surrounded by red varietals dating back to the 12th century, this block is predominantly planted to Chardonnay, with limited amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.

La Bienvenue

Pinot Noir vines line the entrance of DeLoach Vineyards and welcome guests as they arrive at the beautiful estate. The blocks in La Bienvenue (French for “welcome”) have three feet of topsoil and ripen later, which allows for more richness, depth and intensity than our other Pinot Noir grapes.

Les Blancs

Located in the center of the DeLoach Estate, and surrounding the Biodynamic knoll, Chardonnay blocks have the richest and most vigorous soils on the property. Planted to three clones, Dijon 809, Old Wente and the famed Montrachet, the grapes are full of rich flavors including Asian pear, mandarin orange and honeysuckle.

The Russian River Valley Influence

The Russian River Valley is one of Sonoma County’s most agriculturally diverse appellations and has earned its place among the most prestigious winegrowing regions in the country. Much like Burgundy, it is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, site-specific expressions of terroir, and a community of dedicated small growers who coax extraordinary character from the land. The two regions share similar cool-climate influences and a commitment to wines that reflect a true sense of place.

The region’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean invites cooling fog and onshore breezes that act as natural air conditioning. This extended cooling effect allows for a longer growing season, promoting full flavor development and balanced acidity while contributing to the structured yet silky textures that define the wines of the Russian River Valley.
